A life-long Iowan, I have long held a desire to fight for and improve this great state. Growing up in a small town in southeast Iowa, I spent much of time volunteering with my church, both domestically and internationally. After meeting my wife in college, I moved to central Iowa to begin our family.
My wife and I both began our careers in education, working to help prepare the next generation of Iowans for a life of success. The uncertainty and closure of schools during the COVID pandemic inspired my first run for office, as I could see how the school closures impacted my students and their families. When I was elected, my first bill was to reopen our schools. Throughout my first year I fought to make sure that schools were more transparent and accountable to the communities they served. We were able to cap off my first year in the legislature with a bill to allow families the choice to mask or not to mask their children.
My second year was marked with more pushes for school transparency, including ensuring that materials and lessons were appropriate for the ages being taught. We also took steps to ensure individuals liberties were protected from government overreach, allow families to make the decisions that were best for them.
My wife and I battled infertility in our journey to start our family, and we were blessed to welcome our daughter, Ellison, in the winter of 2021 via in vitro fertilization. We were further blessed with the gift of another child, a baby boy due December 2023. It was for our children that my wife and I decided to move to Norwalk, having long admired the community, schools, and the opportunity it afforded our young family.
I now work for Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates (iJAG). My new job allows me to work to ensure our youth across the state have opportunities after high school, no matter the barriers they face. We work to prepare our students with the skills and knowledge they need to obtain a meaningful career for themselves and their families.
